Britain Hanged a 19 Year Old Poet — Beach Queen Elizabeth Never Even Replied [Ευαγορας Παλληκαριδης]
On February 27th, 1938, a boy was born in the village of Tsada, Paphos. He loved poetry,
he loved Cyprus, and at fifteen years old he climbed the flagpole at his school and tore down
the British flag with his bare hands.
At seventeen he left school and went to the mountains with EOKA.
At eighteen he was arrested. At nineteen they hanged him.
The gun he was carrying didn't work. His lawyers sent a telegram to Queen Elizabeth personally asking for mercy.
She never replied.
The night before his execution he wrote: "Time 7:30. The most beautiful day of my life. The most beautiful time."
And he sang for eight hours in his cell so the other prisoners would know that fear had not taken him.
This is the story of Evagoras Pallikarides. The youngest EOKA fighter executed by the British in Cyprus.
